Bobby Petrino Kentucky Rumors

Bobby Petrino Kentucky Rumors, At this point, everyone and their father knows what former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino did before having this photo taken of him at a press conference following his firing from the school.

Now, as the coaching search begins in earnest at Kentucky following the firing of alum and former star wide receiver Joker Phillips (effective at the end of the season), Petrino’s father seems to know something we don’t.

Speaking to the Louisville Courier-Journal on Wednesday, Senior detailed his son’s desire to remain in the conference he dominated while at Arkansas.

“I just know this, that he’s interested in Kentucky,” Bobby Petrino Sr. told the newspaper. “He wants to stay in the SEC. That was his life’s goal was to go to the SEC.”

Following a 40-point, home blowout loss at the hands of another traditional SEC cellar-dweller in Vanderbilt, the Kentucky athletic department, headed by Mitch Barnhart, finally decided enough was enough and pulled the plug on Phillips’ 1-9 third season at the helm of the Wildcats. Countless names have sprung up, from small-school head coaches to big-time assistants, but no name is higher-profile (probably for all the wrong reasons) than that of Petrino.

[Former UK and current Florida offensive coordinator Brent Pease is also in the running]

Petrino is an absolutely fantastic head coach, there is no doubt about that. He is familiar with the state of Kentucky, having coached at Louisville from 2003-06 and compiling a 41-9 overall record. That includes an Orange Bowl win in his final season.

Petrino took over a dreadful Arkansas team and carried the program into relevance only two seasons onto the job, thus proving he has the wherewithal to build a program from the ground up. After going 5-7 in 2008, his team improved to 8-5 in 2009 before going 10-3 and 11-2 in 2010 and ’11, respectively.

Kentucky has proven that it will take on coaches with serious baggage, having hired on John Calipari to lead its basketball program to a national championship after having his Final Four appearance with Memphis vacated due to recruiting violations.

Obviously, that is not nearly as serious as a motorcycle accident with a 25-year old intern along for the ride as a 51-year old married man, but that’s why we love the Rumor Mill, now isn’t it?
