Maple Syrup Seized

Maple Syrup Seized, Truckloads of maple syrup seized believed to be from summer heist, 400,000 pounds of maple syrup seized in New Brunswick appear to be tied to a summer theft of syrup from Quebec. News of the massive syrup seizing broke Wednesday, Oct. 3 and has people buzzing about this rather unusual story. So far 700 to 800 barrels of syrup have been seized and officials are trying to nail down the origins and legitimacy of the syrup purchases.

Last summer, $30 million worth of syrup was stolen from a Montreal warehouse. Quebec provincial police officers and the RCMP put together a search warrant for S.K. Export and CBCNews.ca says so far six loads of maple syrup have been seized, with more perhaps to come. The owner of S.K. Export, Etienne St.-Pierre, says he bought the syrup from a regular supplier and the general manager claims to have documents proving the legitimate purchase of the syrup.

It's likely that few people realize that Quebec produces about three-quarters of the maple syrup used around the world. So far approximately 400,000 pounds of maple syrup have been seized from the New Brunswick warehouse, and officials are not done yet. The business has been under investigation since the summer theft from a large warehouse belonging to the Federation of Quebec Maple Syrup Producers.

The Star notes that St.-Pierre says he paid a regular price for the syrup and had no reason to believe the syrup was stolen. He has not disclosed his supplier, but he buys maple syrup from various suppliers throughout Quebec and resells it for a profit. The police have asked some Quebec syrup producers to take lie-detector tests. Proving the maple syrup seized was part of the heist won't be an easy task for officials from the sounds of it.

What do you think of this unusual story? While the premise sounds a bit amusing, the volumes and dollars involved certainly catch one's attention. It seems likely that few maple syrup fans would stop to think about the millions of dollars involved in the industry that could lead to criminal activity, a huge heist and a massive quantity of maple syrup seized by police.
