Annette Bening Son Transgender, Stephen Ira, the transgender son of Hollywood power couple Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, has filmed a public service announcement opposing a New York Medicaid regulation excluding transgender people from accessing healthcare.
"I grew up outside of New York, but I've always known I've wanted to move here for the city's vibrant artistic community," Ira says in the spot. "As a trans person, I would hope that I'd be welcomed but many trans people aren't because we don't have the basic healthcare coverage we need to survive."
The ad was produced by GLAAD and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project.
In 2011, state Health Commissioner Dr. Nirav Shah said that "no consideration is being given to any change in current state policy and any proposal to have gender reassignment surgery funded by Medicaid would be rejected."
California and Minnesota already use Medicaid funds for the surgery.
