A law enforcement official tells the Associated Press that the shooter has been identified as 20-year-old Adam Lanza, the son of a teacher at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which is a K-4 school.
A second law enforcement official says the man's mother, Nancy Lanza, was a kindergarten teacher. She was found dead at her son's residence, CNN reports.
Although Lanza wasn't named during a Friday afternoon press conference, Connecticut State Police spokesman Lt. Paul Vance told reporters, "The shooter is deceased inside the building."
Vance put the death toll at 28 total: 20 children, six adults, the gunman. Plus, the gunman's mother was found dead elsewhere.
Lanza's brother, Ryan, and their father was taken into custody for questioning by police in New Jersey, but were not named as suspects, CNN reports.
