Insidious 3′ Already in the Works, Leigh Whannell has signed on to write after penning both of the “Insidious” films.

“Insidious: Chapter 2″ dominated the U.S. box office this weekend with $41.1 million.

Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Prods., which produced both “Insidious” films, is also on board to produce the third  installment along with Oren Peli. Steven Schneider, Brian Kavanaugh Jones, Peter Schlessel, Lia Buman and Xavier Marchand are exec producing.

The first two films starred Patrick Wilson, Rose Byrne, Lin Shaye, Ty Simpkins, and Barbara Hershey and were directed by James Wan. It’s not clear if Wan — currently shooting the seventh “Fast and Furious” — will return for the third installment.

The first “Insidious,” made for $1.5 million, forcused on the Lambert family and their son confronting demons that possess the young boy. The film was picked up by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions at the 2010 Toronto Film Festival and went on to gross $97 million worldwide via FilmDistrict in the U.S., eOne handles in Canada, U.K. and Spain, and Sony handling rights in the rest of the world.

“Insidious: Chapter 2,” made for $5 million, was touted as opening on Friday the 13th. The second film centers on the protagonists moving into a new house, only to find that the demons have followed the family.
