Martin Truex Jr. to race with broken wrist after Bristol crash

Martin Truex Jr. to race with broken wrist after Bristol crash, Michael Waltrip Racing driver Martin Truex Jr. will race this weekend at Atlanta Motor Speedway with a broken right wrist suffered in an accident Saturday night at Bristol Motor Speedway.

An MRI on Monday confirmed a scaphoid fracture and sprain to his right wrist, the team announced in a news release. He was fitted with a special cast that will enable him to grip the steering wheel and drive. The team said that Truex has been cleared to race.

Truex, who is 14th in the Sprint Cup standings and currently holds one of the two Chase for the Sprint Cup wild cards thanks to his win at Sonoma, is 22 points out of the top 10 with races at Atlanta and Richmond remaining before the Chase field is set.

The injury happened in the Lap-447 accident when Denny Hamlin had a cut tire from contact with Brian Vickers, triggering a multicar crash.

Truex did not participate in the team’s scheduled test this week at Chicagoland Speedway.
