Reports: AJ Allmendinger headed to JTG Daugherty Racing

Reports: AJ Allmendinger headed to JTG Daugherty Racing, A tumultuous 14 months for AJ Allmendinger appears to have ended back where he began: As a full-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver.

Multiple media outlets, including FoxSports.com, ESPN and SportingNews.com, reported Allmendinger has signed a multi-year contract to drive JTG Daugherty Racing's No. 47 car. He will replace Bobby Labonte, who had the ride for the two previous seasons and most of this one.

The team has scheduled a news conference for Saturday afternoon at Atlanta Motor Speedway, where NASCAR races this weekend.

Allmendinger, 31, was driving for Penske Racing last June when NASCAR gave him a random drug test at Kentucky Speedway. He was suspended starting at Daytona the next week when the test results came back positive.

He initially disputed the test, but then said he took an Adderall pill from a friend.

NASCAR reinstated him in September and he bounced around in several rides: Phoenix Racing's No. 51, Penske Racing's Nationwide car (where he won two road-course races this year) and Penske's IndyCar team, where he finished seventh in the Indianapolis 500.

Allmendinger, a former open-wheel driver, has five top-five finishes in 185 Cup starts
