Possum NYC subway - Possum causes NYC subway evacuation, Riding a New York City subway at 4 a.m. is bound to involve some strange sights. For passengers who spotted a wild possum there last week, it meant the end of the line, as the train was reportedly evacuated while animal-control officers tried to wrangle the critter.

Even some jaded New Yorkers thought the four-legged creature curled up near a radiator under a subway seat was pretty unusual.
Startled riders abroad a Manhattan-bound train spotted the opossum around 4:30 a.m. last Friday.
The New York Times reports that finding the nocturnal creature on a subway train was rare in several ways.
First, they tend to like trees. Two, they are not burrowers although they sometimes go below ground in search of food or warmth.

After the animal bared its teeth at officers who tried to remove it with heavy gloves, animal control experts were called.

NYC Transit spokesman Charles Seaton said it was the first anybody could remember seeing a wild animal in the system.
