Man returns $42k, A man returned $42,000 contained within a backpack to police, saying that he wouldn’t have kept “even a penny.” Glen James, who is homeless, was honored by Boston Police Chief Ed Davis.

James in a handwritten statement said that he was glad the money made it to its owner.

“Even if I were desperate for money, I would not have kept even a penny,” he told The Associated Press.

Davis told USA Today: “He’s an honest guy and realized the property belonged to someone else.”

James said he found the backpack at the South Bay Mall in the Dorchester neighborhood on Saturday. He saw an officer and handed it over.

The backpack had nearly $40,000 in traveler’s checks, cash, Chinese passports, and personal documents.

The man who lost it contacted workers at a Best Buy.

James, who once worked as a courthouse clerk, said he is from Boston and has been homeless since 2005. He is staying at a city homeless shelter, and many people said they are willing to help him out.

The Good Samaritan said James became homeless after he had problems with his boss. James said it is difficult to hold down a job because he suffers from Meniere’s disease, which can cause episodes of vertigo.

He thanked strangers who gave him money on the street. “It’s just nice to have some money in one’s pocket so that as a homeless man I don’t feel absolutely broke all the time,” he told AP.

A Virginia man started an online campaign to raise $50,000 for James.

“I thought what he did was very honorable,” Ethan Whittington told Boston Magazine.
