September 9: A day to honor your grandparents, There are plenty of children who never have the chance to meet their grandparents. And plenty of children who have only known the support of their grandparents. In its Facts for Features series the US Census Bureau has gathered some compelling data about grandparents, a holiday that President Jimmy Carter signed into law in 1978.
Consider the following (from the 2010 census):
7.0 million grandparents were living with grandchildren younger than 18.
2.7 million grandparents were responsible for the basic needs of one or more grandchildren under 18 living with them. Of these caregivers, 1.7 million were grandmothers and 1.0 million were grandfathers.
5.4 million children under 18 were living with a grandparent householder.
We are republishing an interview with Terry Ann Stephens that we recorded last year. In this exclusive interview Stephens talks about the opportunities provided by the Vallejo-based Grandparents Raising Grandchildren support group. Just click on the video to the left of this text.
