Poor riot management: Uttar Pradesh government removes five senior officials, LUCKNOW: The Uttar Pradesh government on Monday finally removed five senior officials of the police and the administration from Muzaffarnagar for their poor handling of the situation in the last few days which saw one of the bloodiest riots in UP. There were indications that the government may set a few more heads rolling at the top level of the state police and administration in the days to come, though no penal action was initiated against any of the officers in connection with the Muzaffarnagar riots till late Monday evening. Meanwhile, with recovery of five more bodies on Monday, death toll in the communal riots now stands at 31.

The government constituted a committee led by retired judge Vishnu Sahai to probe into the riots and the panel will submit report in two months, says a Home department official.

The state government has shunted out commissioner Saharanpur division SK Srivastava along with inspector general of police (IG) Brij Bhushan and deputy IG (DIG) DC Misra out of West UP. The senior superintendent of police (SSP) Muzaffarnagar DC Dubey and SP Shamli Abdul Hameed have also been removed. While SK Srivastava has been put on the waiting list, the police officers have been attached to the director general of police (DGP) headquarters in Lucknow till further orders.

The government has now appointed additional DG Bhavesh Kumar as over all in charge of Saharanpur range and adjoining districts, Ashok Mutha Jain has been posted DIG Saharanpur. Pravin Kumar has been appointed the new senior superintendent of police Muzaffarnagar and Anil Kumar Rai as Shamli police chief. Pravin and Anil Kumar were both commandants with different battalions of the PAC before they were assigned their new tasks.

Additional DG Law and Order Arun Kumar said the government had suspended inspector Om Veer Singh, in charge of the police station under which violence continued unabated on Sunday. He has been replaced by inspector RN Tiyagi. "Names of all those accused in the murder of the two youths in Kawal village on August 27 have been dropped from the case as their role could not be established in the crime during the ongoing investigation," Arun Kumar said talking to TOI on phone from Muzaffarnagar.

About police action against those responsible for the rioting, police sources in Muzaffarnagar said FIRs have been lodged against four sitting BJP MLAs, including Hukum Singh who is also the leader of the BJP legislature party in UP assembly and against Sangeet Singh Som, Bhartendu and Suresh Rana. Besides, cases have also been registered against sitting Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MP Qadir Rana and former MP of the Congress party Hirendra Mallik. All six politicians have been accused of instigating communal violence through inflammatory speeches. Another case against 1,000 unidentified individuals has been lodged for organising and participating in the maha panchayat at Muzaffarnagar on Saturday even after the district administration turned down their application for permission to hold the event.

BJP MLA Hukum Singh, told TOI he did attend the maha pachayat but had no role in the event. About allegations of making fiery speeches which instigated the mob and in turn led to communal clashes, Hukum Singh said he speeches were plain and simple. He challenged the authorities to produce the video of his speeches and offered to retire from politics if the allegations on him were proved right.
