Although Richard Nixon asked Pat Ryan to marry him on their first date, they waited two years before they married at a historic hotel . Their daughter Julie married the grandson  of another U.S. president .

Lyndon and Lady Bird Johnson

Lyndon Johnson and "Lady Bird" Taylor were introduced by a mutual friend, and he proposed on their first date , though she didn't accept for another 10 weeks. They married in a small ceremony the day after she said yes .

Socialite Jacqueline Bouvier married then-Senator John F. Kennedy in a lavish wedding  with more than 800 guests attending . The couple later spent many vacations at the location of their reception .

Dwight and Mamie Eisenhower

Dwight Eisenhower gave Mamie a miniature replica of his West Point class ring for their engagement, and the couple married at her parents' home . The military couple had a brief honeymoon before they started their life together on an Army post .

Harry and Bess Truman

Childhood sweethearts Harry Truman and Bess Wallace  had their wedding plans interrupted by Harry's service in World War I. They married  shortly after his return, and the couple had one daughter .

Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt

Franklin Roosevelt began courting his distant cousin, Eleanor, in secret because of his mother's opposition to the union . Despite this, the couple married on St. Patrick's Day in 1905  in New York City.

Woodrow and Edith Wilson

A widow, Edith Galt, was introduced to President Woodrow Wilson, who was  a widower, at a White House function. The two had a controversial romance that lasted only nine months before they married . A close couple, she cared for  her ailing husband as president, and some say helped run the government.

Theodore and Edith Roosevelt

Childhood friends Theodore Roosevelt and Edith Carow reconnected after the death of his first wife , and they married in a small ceremony in London . The Roosevelts raised five children as well as his daughter from his first marriage .

Ulysses and Julia Grant

The marriage of Ulysses Grant and Julia Dent was postponed by his military service  but eventually took place at her family home , despite the objections of both his and her families. While Grant was in office, the Grants hosted the wedding of their daughter  at the White House.
