southern miss chant, Southern Mississippi University lived up to the racist reputation of the deep South on Friday when members of the school band chanted an offensive question at a Latino player on the opposing team.As he prepared to shoot his free throws, Kansas State point guard Angel Rodriguez was forced to listen to a chant of “Where’s your green card?” coming from the audience.Manhattan Mercury reporter Cole Manbeck tweeted that the racist serenade came from members of the Southern Mississippi band.

As Kansas State triumphed over Southern Mississippi in the NCAA tournament Thursday, some sore-loser fans began a racist chant, CNN reported.

Band members from Southern Miss could be heard reciting “Where’s your green card?” when Hispanic point guard for K-State Angel Rodriguez shot free throws.

Rodriguez remained calm and helped his team by scoring 13 points in their 70-64 win.

Southern Miss president Martha Saunders issued an apology on the school’s website:

We deeply regret the remarks made by a few students at today’s game. The words of these individuals do not represent the sentiments of our pep band, athletic department or university. We apologize to Mr. Rodriguez and will take quick and appropriate disciplinary action against the students involved in this isolated incident.
The first two days of the NCAA Tournament are about as great a time to be a sports fan as we have in a given year. It’s very hard to find anything to be down about when there is a constant, never-ending stream of hoops on TV.

Pure, undeniable racism would be one of those things – even during March Madness. Thursday’s showdown between Southern Miss and Kansas State reminded us of that.

According to Cole Manbeck, beat writer for the Manhattan Mercury, the Southern Miss band -- though it’s unclear whether it was one person or multiple people -- chanted “Where’s your green card?
