History of Underwear [PHOTOS]

History of underwear - Underwear, you've come a long way, baby. From loincloths to Spanx and all the bad ideas in between, we're taking a look back at the evolution of undies.

The loincloth

These tiny pieces of cloth were designed to cover a man in front and at least part of his behind. They were often made of leather, cloth or part of a tree.
The codpiece

This strategically placed pouch showed up in the 15th century and often was used to carry prized possessions.
The corset

Torso-cinching corsets reached the height of their popularity in the Victorian era. Did they really injure women?
The push-up bra

The first push-up bra hit the market in 1893, but its popularity soared when a certain undergarment maker began a successful ad campaign for them in the 1940s.
Boxers or briefs?

Men wore union suits until the 20th century, when they were liberated with two more choices: boxer shorts  and briefs, which were introduced in 1934
Lingerie

Women's underwear started getting sexier in the '60s and '70s, with help from a certain political movement and a famous lingerie store.
Underwear as outerwear

When this Material Girl hit the scene, young women all over the world started showing off their lacy bras. Thankfully, another bra-inspired look of hers never caught on.
The thong

The thong was introduced in the 1980s and quickly became the go-to choice for ladies the world over.
Boxer briefs

This Oscar nominee was still a rapper when he bared almost all for Calvin Klein's new hybrid skivvy: the boxer brief.
Boy shorts for women

In recent years, the more modest boy short has become more popular than the thong.
Spanx

None other than Oprah Winfrey picked these body shapers for this list in 2000.
'Mirdles'

What: The man girdle, or "mirdle", claims to help men who want to lose the beer gut without working out. Does it work?
