World's tallest woman dies in China

World's tallest woman dies in China, Yao Defen, of eastern China's Anhui province, was listed as the world's tallest woman by Guinness World Records in 2010, when she stood 2.33 metres (seven foot eight inches) high, according to the record compiler's website.

"Yao Defen died in the middle of last month," a spokesman for the government of Shucha township, where Yao lived, told AFP by telephone.

The official, who refused to give his name, said that he was not certain of the cause of her death.

Yao, recorded as the third tallest woman who ever lived, was 40 when she died. Her gigantism was reportedly due to a tumour in her pituitary gland.

An Anhui newspaper reported that she died on November 13, having reached a height of 2.36 metres, adding that she was already more than two metres tall when she was 15.

Tallest woman dies: 39-year-old stood 7 feet and 7 inches tall, Sadly, the world's tallest woman died at 39. Yao Defen of China, passed away last month, but is just being reported to media sources. The tallest woman in the world, by Guinness World Records standards, is dead after a long struggle with gigantism. However, a cause of death has not been released.

Citing a report on Dec. 5 by the Denver Post, sources say Defen died Nov. 13 in China's eastern province of Anhui. Her mother, who has been by her side since she became too frail, discovered her lifeless body, according to the Daily Mail.

In 2010, Guinness World Records certified her height as 7-feet, 7-inches, giving her the distinction as the tallest woman in the world.

Several years ago, Defen expressed anguish over her condition. While others marvel over her being the world's tallest woman, the Chinese woman had another take on the milestone. Instead of celebrating, the tallest woman in the world said this several years ago:

"I am very unhappy. Why am I this tall? If I were not this tall, others would not look at me like this," Defen said to journalists while she lay in bed.

In fact, the bed in her meager home had become a place that practically held her captive, yet free from those who traveled from far distances to get a look. She felt her height had become somewhat of a sideshow, a thing for others to exploit for financial gain.

As the world's tallest woman, one would think it comes with a lot of glitz and glamour. However, as experts point out, those who suffer from gigantism are weakened over time as the body struggles to keep pace with the out-of-control-growth.

Even on her best days, Defen could only sit up on bed for up to an hour. Additionally, she required a cane and handlers to assist with walking. In short, her life towards the end was marked with severe struggling, weakness and pain.

Despite the hope of a cure from medical treatments, the tallest woman died, likely due to complications from being too tall and still growing. In the end, it was her smile that most say they will remember about Yao.
