States Increase School Hours

States Increase School Hours, Five states are increasing school hours for the 2013 calendar year by at least 300 hours for students, FOX News reports Sunday. Participating states include New York, Massachusetts, Colorado, Tennessee, and Connecticut. The decision is all part of an initiative to be more competitive with other nations on a global level.

How long will this new initiative be in place? The plan is for three years and will impact about 20,000 students in 40 schools. It's still undecided whether longer hours will be added to a typical school day or more days of education. It's possible both will happen.

Federal, state, and district funds will afford the increase in school hours along with the Ford Foundation and the National Center on Time and Learning.

The objective for the five states increasing school hours will also give students a more well-rounded curriculum on subjects such as art and music with additional support for those needing individual help in math and science.

This initiative program will hopefully help the U.S. be more competitive in education as the country falls further behind other nations.

How do you feel about the increase in school hours by some U.S. states?
