Racist Sorority Photo

Racist Sorority Photo, A Chi Omega chapter is under investigation for an alleged racist sorority photo circulating from a group of Penn State girls. The "offensive" party picture shows the women clad in attire that depicts Mexicans based on stereotypes. While the sorority image was meant for "fun," others don't see it as a laughing matter.

Huffington Post shared an update on the story in a Dec. 5 post. It said the girls in the racist party picture are the focus of an investigation after someone uploaded the image to Facebook and Tumblr Monday.

The image, said to be part of a "Mexican-themed" party by the Penn State chapter of Chi Omega, shows the girls dressed in fake mustaches, sombreros and ponchos. Two girls in the front row hold up signs that read: "will mow lawn for weed + beer" and "I don't cut grass, I smoke it."

Some call the sorority photo racist because it suggests that Mexicans indulge heavily in marijuana in Cheech and Chong style.

Ironically, a recent report showed that nearly 25 percent of 18-25-year-olds in the United States smoke weed. In contrast, only about one percent of Mexicans smoke pot.

After the backlash from the racist sorority photo hit alarming levels, heads of the chapter released a statement lashing out at the offensive image.

In the moment, it's all fun and seemingly harmless. However, in the larger scope of things, the image is offensive, point-blank...period.
