Tommy Tuberville Apologizes, At his Monday press conference, Texas Tech head coach Tommy Tuberville apologized for striking the head of special teams coach Kevin Oliver during Saturday's game against Kansas.
Tuberville said Monday he had watched a replay of his outburst and saw what had fans upset. He called his actions "unfortunate" and said he had apologized to Oliver.
Tuberville said he did not strike Oliver. He said he reached and pulled on Oliver's headset.
Video of the incident went viral over the weekend as Fox television cameras caught the former Ole Miss and Auburn coach knocking Oliver's headset and hat off of his head.Sports Illustrated is reporting Monday that Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby is "engaged" in discussions on how to best handle the incident.The third-year Texas Tech coach's tone changed Monday after what he said immediately after the Red Raider's 41-34 victory in double overtime.
"It wasn't anything to it," he said Saturday. "It was just one of those deals where I missed his shoulder and ended up grabbing the microphone on his head set and pulled it off."
Footage shows Tuberville facing Oliver, who oversees special teams.
The coach appears to use his left hand to strike Oliver on the right side of his face. Oliver's headset and ball cap fall off.
It happened when the Red Raiders seemed to have difficulty getting the right personnel on the field.
